A LEGENDARY Sheffield Wednesday striker and a team of Owls fans are getting ready to set off on a 180-mile charity cycle ride.

The group will saddle up after Wednesday’s away match against Brentford and cycle back home from London.

The challenge, organised by the Wednesdayite supporters’ club, was arranged to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston.

Wednesdayite director Peter Shaw, who is taking part with the group’s chairman Nigel Short and financial director Paul Holmes, said: “Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice supports and cares for local children with shortened life expectancy.

“It is the only children’s hospice within South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and North West Lincolnshire.”

The group previously cycled a sponsored coast-to-coast ride in 2009, and are hoping to repeat their fundraising success.

Bluebell Wood chief executive Sarah Champion said: “On behalf of everyone at Bluebell Wood, I’d like to thank David Hirst and the Wednesdayites for supporting the hospice and wish them well on their journey.”
