Three health workers are attacked at Sheffield medical trusts every single day, according to shocking new figures.
In just one year, from April 2012 to March this year, 1,200 health workers were attacked in the city, according to NHS figures.
At Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust, which treats people with dementia and mental health problems, 805 workers were attacked, while at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals just under 200 were set upon by patients.
Meanwhile, at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, 223 employees were assaulted.
However, across the entire region, just 11 people were brought to book with criminal sanctions punishing their violent behaviour – even though 383 attacks were deliberate and not due to medical conditions.
But the figures could be just the tip of the iceberg – union bosses say the figures don’t include verbal attacks.
