Sheffield has been named as one of the UK's happiest places in a new survey - putting it ahead of Leeds.

The poll, by GalaBingo.com, ranked Sheffield as the second happiest place in Britain - putting it ahead of West Yorkshire rivals Leeds.

Newcastle topped the survey as Britain's happiest place while Manchester and Bristol also made the top five.

However, Birmingham was named as the country's most miserable spot with London, Glasgow, Norwich and Southampton also named as the most depressing.

The study revealed that two thirds of Brits (65%) rate happiness at 7/10 - and spending time with family is the key way Brits improve their mood.

GalaBingo.com polled over 2,000 Brits to find out how we rate our happiness and what improves our mood. 69% of people in Sheffield said they had a happiness level of 7/10 or more.

Top ten things that make Brits happy:

Going on holiday (34%)

Eating favourite foods (25%)

Socialising with friends (24%)

Getting peace and quiet / relaxing! (23%)

Watching your favourite TV show or film (22%)

A long, restful night of sleep / a nap (22%)

Getting outdoors (14%)

When asked about big life moments, Brits revealed that having a baby made them most happy, followed by getting married.

4. Passing your driving test (22%)

5. Being offered a new job (21%)

6. Getting a promotion (20%)

7. Going on dream holiday or honeymoon (20%)

9. Getting engaged (14%)

10. Celebrating a big birthday (14%)

It also seems that things do get better with age, with over 65s the happiest age group in the nation.

As expected, 25 December is the day of the year when we feel most contented, followed by 1 January.
