Sheffield MP quits aide role

SHEFFIELD MP Angela Smith has resigned from her job as a ministerial aide, The Star can reveal.

Ms Smith has stepped down from her role as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Treasury Minister Yvette Cooper.

The Sheffield Hillsborough MP said she wanted the freedom to concentrate on beefing up the powers of local councils to take control of bus services and ensuring that a coastal path is established around the UK.

Earlier this year, Ms Smith was on the brink of quitting over the controversial abolition of the 10p tax rate.

The Prime Minister was forced to break off talks he was having in Washington to telephone Ms Smith and persuade her to stay.
