SHEFFIELD MP Nick Clegg has called on Sheffield Council to drop any plans to develop Abbeydale Playing Fields in the city.
Following the closure of Abbeydale Grange School, Sheffield Council has been consulting on options for the future of the site, with one of the options including developing the former school and surrounding green space.
Lib Dem leader Mr Clegg made his plea yesterday when the consultation period ended.
He said: “There is a great deal of concern that Abbeydale Playing Fields could be built on. This green space is well used and much loved by the local community.
“The council should resist any temptation to build on it.
“Many of my constituents value the playing fields, and the sports pitches are used by Ecclesall Rangers and Millhouses Juniors. It would be a huge mistake to lose this green space.
“I have urged the council to listen and develop in other more appropriate locations.”
Last summer Mr Clegg and his wife Miriam visited Abbeydale Playing Fields to speak to local residents about their concerns.
