Sheffield MP backs polling law change

LAW changes to allow people queuing at polling stations to cast their vote after 10pm have been welcomed by a South Yorkshire MP.

Angela Smith, Labour MP for Penistone & Stocksbridge, hopes the move means problems which saw hundreds of people unable to vote in Sheffield at the 2010 general election ‘will not happen again’.

Ms Smith said: “It is pleasing that in future polling stations will offer the opportunity to cast a vote to those queuing at that time.

“It is only right those wishing to vote who have turned up at the polling station before the close should be allowed to.”

John Mothersole, Sheffield Council chief executive gave up his £20,000 returning officer’s fee over the problems at the 2010 election, which saw hundreds of people queuing at stations unable to vote after the 10pm deadline passed.
