Readers of The Star have reacted with sympathy for the Sheffield Half Marathon organising committee – who announced at the weekend they are stepping down from arranging future events after this year’s cancellation fiasco.
The race, in April, had to be abandoned due to a lack of water for runners. Organisers insisted the water had been ordered, but the suppliers disagree and say the order was never paid for.
Last week officials revealed they had received abusive emails, letters and phone calls in the wake of the shambles.
And readers of The Star online said that was a shame. Dan Douglas wrote on The Star’s Facebook page: “What a sad end to an event they have established and built.
“But if they have received abuse I don’t blame them for going, they are volunteers after all.”
Runner Paddy Lavin said: “Let’s hope we still have a Sheffield Half Marathon in 2015.
“Well done on keeping this event moving forward for 30 years – it’s a shame it’s ended this way.
“PS I don’t want a refund – I got my T shirt and medal after completing the event anyway.”
But Gary Greaves asked: “They have stepped down but something went wrong – what about reimbursement?”
And Cheryl Edwards queried: “Does that mean we will never find out who was actually responsible for the water fiasco?
“Sad day though, I hope someone steps in to run it.”
Mark Birch quipped: “Are they going to try organising a drinking event in a brewery?”
Angela Lane joked: “Were they emotionally drained?”
And Mick Ibbotson said: “They’ve bottled it, literally.”
