A SHEFFIELD man is among a group of tourists awarded a share of £550,000 after enduring a holiday from hell.

Gulraj Matharu, from Sheffield, travelled to the Riu Miramar Hotel in the Bulgarian resort of Obzor in 2006 and developed a gastric bug.

He was among a group of 138 who fell ill that summer and lodged a claim for compensation with tour operator TUI UK Limited.

They suffered symptoms including diarrhoea, sickness, stomach pains and fever, which they said ruined their holidays.

The tourists fought for compensation with the help of Sheffield law firm Irwin Mitchell and have been awarded a share of £550,000, with a top payment of up to £16,750.

Some 103 cases were settled early last year after holidaymakers complained about standards of food hygiene, management of the hotel and the way a flood at the hotel was dealt with.

Now the final 35 cases have been finalised bringing the total group settlement to more than £550,000.

Irwin Mitchell said the case should highlight the importance of safety standards to all tour operators.

It criticised TUI UK Limited for settling the 35 outstanding cases just weeks before a full five-day trial was due to start.
