Sheffield man killed in road smash

A SHEFFIELD man died in a motorway smash last night.

The 42-year-old, who has not yet been named but is from Wincobank, was travelling northbound along the M1 when his Vauxhall Vectra drifted onto the hard shoulder near the slip road at junction 31, mounted a grass embankment and hit a road sign.

Emergency services raced to the crash scene and battled to save the driver but he died from the extent of his injuries.

Witnesses to the collision at 8.40pm, or anyone who saw the moments leading up to it, should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 22020 and quote incident 1172 of July 4.
