A man has been charged with a string of offences following the theft of a van with a French bulldog inside, and a subsequent collision.

Lee Stephen Fletcher, aged 39, of Stradbroke Road, Sheffield, appeared before Sheffield magistrates on Wednesday charged with assaulting a police officer, burglary, aggravated vehicle taking without owner’s consent and related driving offences, including driving with no insurance and no licence.

He was remanded into custody and will appear before Sheffield Crown Court on November 19.

Police arrested Fletcher after being called to reports of the theft of a van from a car park in Abbeydale Road South, Sheffield, on Monday morning.

The silver van, which had the owner’s French Bulldog inside, was later involved in a crash with a bus and a police car at around 1.30pm on Stradbroke Road, Woodhouse.

Two police officers and a number of bus passengers were injured in the collision and taken to hospital.

All have since been released - and the dog traced.
