BRADLEY Wiggins has a lot to answer for...
The sight of grown men in lycra is becoming increasingly common on the streets of our city, in part thanks to Bradley’s cycling exploits. But it’s not often you see a group of cyclists dressed like this.
More than 30 members of Sheffrec Cycling Club met up at Malin Bridge to take a 35-mile spin through the city centre, then on along to Ecclesall Road and the Peak District, for their annual Christmas Fancy Dress Ride.
Spiderman was there, as well as both members of Jedward, along with Tigger, Scooby Doo, Biggles, Mr T, a Thunderbird, a giant airmail envelope and many more zany characters.
Team member Keith Ainsworth said: “Shoppers stopped to admire us and smile at the parade on Fargate and the steps of the City Hall!
“The cafe set on Ecclesall Road found time to smile and cheer too - and perhaps contemplate that a skinny latte may have been a better idea while viewing the lithe state of the participants.
“Even through Baslow and Curbar the pip-pip sound of welcoming car horns and cheering children was unrelenting - as was the pace of the riders leading the peloton up Froggat Climb passing Sunday cyclists dressed normally!”
Once the lads reached their final destination - The Norfolk Arms at Ringinglow - they were in for a special treat.
Keith said: “We had a deserved homemade meat and potato pie, followed by rhubarb and custard, washed down with a pint of Moonshine.”
Several hours later spouses arrived in cars to collect the bikes and a slightly worse for wear bunch of fancy dress cyclists. “A fine day was had by all,” added Keith.
