A lorry driver from Sheffield is swapping his cab for a convertible and heading to Barcelona – but the journey will not be an easy one.
Paul Haley and his friend Billy Moss are taking part in the Barmy to Barcelona rally which will see them drive 1,500 miles through nine countries in four days – in a car covered in false breasts.
The wacky race, which sets off from Lille, France, on July 4 will see around 80 teams driving cars worth no more than £250 through northern France and over the Pyrenees to Barcelona.
The pair are using the trek to raise money for the Breast Cancer Care charity.
And to make sure his MG convertible stands out from the rest Paul, from Crookes, has been busy decorating the hub caps with false breasts.
The Signshop, on Carlisle Street, Sheffield has also wrapped the car with the team’s name Simply The Breast for free.
Paul, aged 49, said: “It got the idea when I saw all the woman posting selfies on Facebook earlier this year for Cancer Research.
“I posted a picture and said I would try to find something that takes things one step further.
“My friend mentioned the Wacky Rallies, so I contacted them.
“I bought my friend’s MG convertible for £250.
“It had been sitting on his drive because he couldn’t afford to repair it.
“It cost me £300 to get the engine repaired.
“I was worried about the car’s reliability and what would happen if I break down.
“I’ve been told there are 80 cars taking part, both big and small, and if it breaks down then your car will be pulled around the route using a rope. Every car finishes.”
Paul said he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received while driving his colourful motor around Sheffield.
He is regularly stopped so people can have their photograph taken with it and donate to his cause.
“People have been absolutely fantastic,” Paul added.
“The response has been overwhelming.
“ I am a lorry driver on he night shift, so once I have a few hours sleep I drive the car around in the afternoon trying to raise awareness.”
