The headteacher of a Sheffield comprehensive school has quit.

Andy Ireland's decision to leave Westfield School was announced in a letter sent to parents today.

The letter states that the headteacher has already left the school.

It states that he wishes to 'follow other career plans' and it is believed that parents and pupils were not aware of his decision to leave before today's letter was sent out.

The letter, signed by the chairman of the school's board of governors, Claire Sellars, said: "He has asked me to forward his best wishes for the future to all involved with the school.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Ireland on behalf of the school community and also wish him well for the future."

The school is currently in consultation over converting to an academy with a view to joining the Silverdale Multi Academy Trust.

Roisin Paul, headteacher of Silverdale School in Bents Green, has been appointed as the interim head of Westfield School following Mr Ireland's decision to leave.

The letter reads: "There will be some further adjustments of roles and responsibilities within the team to ensure the smooth day to day running of the school.

"I know that Mrs Paul will be in touch with parents and carers once she has started, to share her vision for our school.

"Given her experience in leading Silverdale as an outstanding school, I look forward to the excellent ideas and commitment she will bring.

"I know we are facing a period of change but I am confident that, by working in partnership with Silverdale, we will be able to build on the good work we have already achieved, and ensure that Westfield provides the best education possible for our children."

A statement issued today by Ms Sellars said: “Mr Ireland, our head teacher, left the school on Friday to follow other career plans.

“We have been consulting with the parents and the community about converting the school to an academy and joining Silverdale Multi Academy Trust. Given these discussions Roisin Paul, head teacher of Silverdale, will take over as interim head at Westfield School. Mrs Paul will also continue to act as head teacher at Silverdale School.

“Mrs Paul will be in touch with parents shortly to outline her vision for the school.

“I would to thank Mr Ireland on behalf of the school community for his hard work and wish him well for the future.”

In 2014, Westfield School was judged by Ofsted to 'require improvement'.

At the time, inspectors said the school needed to improve in most areas, with pupil attainment judged to be not as high as it could be, including that of the most able students.

Inspectors found the quality of teaching across the school was inconsistent and truancy levels were above average.

In an Ofsted monitoring report published last year, the school was deemed to be improving and was said to 'remain on course to be judged a good school when next inspected'.

Mr Ireland took over the running of Westfield School in 2011 following the resignation of his predecessor, Susan Simmons.
