A SHEFFIELD community group’s passion for conservation has seen it win a top award.

Environmental group Owlthorpe Community Forum won the Yorkshire Rose award in the conservation category at Yorkshire in Bloom 2012.

Volunteers have created heritage trails, acres of cattle grazing fields, planted new hedgerows, thousands of new trees and flowers as well as worked on dry stone walling as part of conservation work in the area.

The group also scooped a gold rose in the urban community category.

Judges praised the group for its ‘large scale’ conservation and said it meant ‘the surrounding community can access more rural areas’.

Roger Marsh, a member and former chairman of the Community Forum, said: “We are absolutely delighted.”
