Fundraisers got into the swing of it on a golf course and raised £24,000 for a Sheffield hospital.

A 100-hole golf challenge, for Weston Park Hospital, was organised by the captains of Abbeydale Golf Club - Mavis Sellars and Andrew Brooks - and was completed by two teams of four players.

A mystery benefactor donated £10,000, which was match funded by the May Hearnshaw Charitable Trust, which gave £12,000 in memory of Trustee Nick Wolstenholme, who lost his battle with cancer.

Nick, who supported Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity before his diagnosis, after a friend was diagnosed with cancer, received treatment at the specialist hospital before passing away in March at the age of 52.

Richard Law, of The May Hearnshaw Trust, said: “The May Hearnshaw Charitable Settlement made this donation to match Abbeydale Golf Club’s fund raising in memory of our late friend and co-trustee, Nick Wolstenholme, who sadly passed away in March 2015.

“Nick loved supporting charities such as Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, especially where we could match-fund to achieve greater benefit.

“We remember Nick’s courage and forthrightness in dealing with the diagnosis of his brain tumour. He was always ready to joke and smile about it.”

Charity fundraiser, Sarah Cross, said: “We are overwhelmed by the amount raised at the Abbeydale Golf Day and incredibly grateful to The May Hearnshaw Trust.

“The money raised will fund vital projects within Weston Park Hospital to ultimately improve the lives of thousands of people fighting cancer across the region.”

Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats

This year, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity needs to raise £1.8 million to fund projects that help treat and care for cancer patients across the region.
