The Government will give Sheffield £675,000 to encourage more house building in the city.

The council bid for the money from an £18 million fund, and will top up the grant to create a £1.3 million pot to make brownfield land previously used for industry or commerce more attractive to developers.

The idea is to bring in more private investment and public funds. The council wants to see more than 4,300 new homes built over the next 10 years.

Sheffield has also been awarded ‘housing zone’ status. This means the council will be able to work more closely with the Government to bid for public funds to help regenerate inner city neighbourhoods.

The exact location of the housing zone will be announced over the coming months.

The council's cabinet member for infrastructure and transport Mazher Iqbal said: “I’m delighted that we’ve won this extra funding which will help us encourage thousands of new homes in Sheffield.

“The announcement today is excellent news and means we can start working closely with businesses, land-owners and the community to carry out the detailed work to revitalise parts of the city and bring brownfield sites back into use.

“We want to encourage more investment in Sheffield and help the thousands of people who want to get onto the property ladder but can’t due to a lack of housing.

“We will be consulting with local people and business about what they want, to make sure that development is carried out sensitively and sustainably.”

Last year around 1,800 new homes were built in Sheffield.

Housing minister Gavin Barwell, who announced the £18 million fund, said: “We want to turbo-charge house building on large sites to get the homes built in the places people want to live, so that this country works for everyone, not just the privileged few.

“These sites offer enormous potential to transform brownfield land into new homes and our £18m funding will help get them built much sooner."
