Sheffield Forgemasters opened its doors to the public to give a rare glimpse behind the scenes at one of the world’s largest steel plants.
The open day at the Brightside Lane site was attended by hundreds of friends and relatives of employees, retired former workers and specially invited guests.
Visitors were taken on a two and a half hour tour of the site and were able to look inside the different areas of production including the Forge, Foundry, Melt Shop, the quarter mile long South Machine Shop and the North Machine Shop.
Mark Tomlinson, group development director at Sheffield Forgemasters, said: “We started running the annual open day seven years ago and it is popular.
“We get so many requests from people wanting to look around the site and see what we do that we decided to hold a day-long event that offers people that chance.
“It’s also a really good opportunity for employee’s friends and families to understand more about what happens where their loved ones work.”
