BATTLE lines have been drawn by political candidates running for a seat on Sheffield Council.
A by-election will take place in Fulwood ward on Thursday, May 2, triggered by the death of Liberal Democrat Janice Sidebottom, who lost a fight against cancer.
Cliff Woodcraft has been selected by the Liberal Democrats to defend the seat.
The party won in Fulwood last year with an 800 majority.
Mr Woodcraft, aged 63, lives in Fulwood and is a volunteer delivering lunches to vulnerable people for St Luke’s Church, Lodge Moor.
He said: “I aim to make sure Janice’s work continues.”
Challengers include Tory Vonny Watts, who came second in the seat last year. She said: “I just continue to work hard on local issues.”
Labour’s candidate is Olivia Blake, a Sheffield University microbiology and medical biology PhD student.
The 23-year-old is campaigning on ‘issues facing young people’ including tuition fees.
Meanwhile, UKIP are represented by John Greenfield, a charge nurse for the Macmillan cancer unit in Sheffield.
Brian Webster, 24, another Sheffield University PhD student, is standing for the Green Party. He said: “We’d like to highlight that there are choices to be made at local level about cuts.”
Nominations for the by-election close tomorrow.
