A MOTORIST has died after police believed she lost control of her car on the M1 near Sheffield.

The woman’s silver Vauxhall Corsa car crossed the hard shoulder, slid down an embankment and hit trees before overturning on Easter Sunday, just before 5.40am.

A police spokesman said: “The Corsa was travelling northbound, half a mile south of Junction 31 at Aston, when the driver appears to have lost control with the car leaving the carriageway.”

The driver, a 52-year-old Hartlepool woman, sustained fatal head and chest injuries.

A 40-year-old Scottish man, a passenger in the Corsa, needed hospital treatment for cuts and bruises.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
