They’re not saying there’s never been a cross word…
But after 72 years together, married Sheffield couple Ray and Rose Simmons say they still have plenty to smile about.
The couple, who live at Knowle Hill care home in Mosborough – one of 11 residential care homes operated across Sheffield by not-for-profit organisation Sheffcare - celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary with special greetings from the Queen.
They enjoyed a party for friends, fellow residents of the home, and for five generations of their big family.
The couple are both Sheffielders born and bred – Ray, who is 93, was a grinder at the English Steel Corporation, then worked as a steel examiner - while Rose, who is 92, worked as a packer for the Ingrams Tea Company and then as a cleaner.
They first started courting after meeting while on a night out in Sheffield city centre, and were later married at St Barnabas Church, Highfield.
And the secret of their long and happy marriage?
“Well we’ve had the occasional quarrel,” Rose admits. “But nothing too bad!”
