SHEFFIELD Council could face a bill of almost £3,000 for sending its councillors on a speed reading course to help them deal with documents.

The authority has invited all 84 councillors to take part in Read Faster with Greater Understanding workshops.

Classes cost £500 each and could be held for up to 15 councillors at a time. Six sessions would be required for 84 councillors, costing £3,000 in total.

Lib Dem leader Coun Shaffaq Mohammed questioned the spending and said: “It’s astounding Labour believes reading classes for councillors are a higher priority than keeping open libraries or leisure centres.”

But Coun Bryan Lodge, council cabinet member for finance, insisted: “The course is very useful. We are faced with reports of up to 80 pages long.”

He said he had been on speed reading courses with Lib Dem and Green councillors in the past, and added: “To try to score political points over this is outrageous.

“The course costs £34 per person.”
