FOR years they couldn’t find him.
But now Osama Bin Laden has turned up - in a Sheffield city centre shop window.
Controversial fancy dress shop Party On in Division Street has caused a bit of a stir with its costumed mannequin poking fun at the executed former Al-Qaeda leader.
Designed by Eve Kann, the costume - comprising of combat clothing, a pair of silly glasses and a turban - has been placed on a bearded dummy which is lying down in the shop front holding a white flag. A female mannequin dressed as an American soldier stands in front of him holding a toy gun.
Eve, aged 22, from Ecclesall Road said the idea was to keep the window display as current and topical as possible.
She said: “We’ve had lots of people taking photographs and just generally laughing about it.
“No one has been in to complain and no one seems to be offended.
“We have two Muslim members of staff and they love it.
“We did get some complaints about our Royal Wedding window though. A couple of people pointed out that we had hung the Union flag upside down.”
Out on the street passers-by were stopping to discuss the costume.
Janice Middleton, 56, a catering manager from Mosborough, said: “I think it’s quite funny. I often look at the window displays here and have to say they are usually very good.”
Sam Jensch, 21, a Sheffield University economics graduate from Crookesmoor reckoned the costume could have been better placed.
“To have it in front of the shop open to the street is a little inappropriate in my eyes.” he said. “But it’s not offensive.”
Ashley Andrews, 17, a student from Pitsmoor loved it as did his student mate Si Ilyas, 17, from Meersbrook.
Ashley said: “It’s very, very funny. I love the beard and the glasses. I don’t see why anyone would be offended by it.
“In fact I’d like to see a picture of Bin Laden dead to prove once and for all that he is really gone.”
Si added: “It’s class. A good costume showing one of the best hide and seek players ever.”
