Sheffield children's charity supporter joining the stampede

Caz Kay has been a supporter of Sheffield Children's Hospital for many years and last October decided to swap her club vest, Totley AC, for a Team Theo one.

In an attempt to raise as much money for the hospital as possible 38 year-old Caz, from Bradway Sheffield, is embarking on a year-long challenge, which started back in October 2015 and will finish October 2016.

Having already come second in the 13 mile Go Big Moor fell race, and as well as completing the Thorsby 10 miles Caz is planning to add a Virtual Stampede medal to her trophy cabinet

The Virtual Stampede challenges individuals to walk, run, cycle or swim a total distance of 60km throughout the month of September, raising much needed funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital’s Physiotherapy Department.

Caz was inspired to raise money for The Children’s Hospital Charity after her daughter had an operation to remove her Adenoids.

“On September 23, 2015, I came back from Sheffield Children’s Hospital with my 8 year-old daughter,” said Caz. “She had her Adenoids out under General Anaesthetic. I wish someone had warned me about seeing my child go under. I wasn’t prepared for that! I left her on the operating table and was escorted by a nurse out of the room, holding a pager. I felt very emotional to say the least. 30 minutes later the pager vibrated and I raced to her bedside where she was beginning to wake up. That was a long 30 minutes!”

Adenoids is a mass of enlarged lymphatic tissue between the back of the nose and the throat, often hindering speaking and breathing in young children.

“It was during this time when I had a chance to reflect on things. This whole process absolutely broke my heart. But, my daughter’s procedure was minor compared to many other unfortunate children in the hospital. I thought, I need to do something here. I need to try and make a difference to these childrens’ lives.”

“I do so many events each year and it’s about time that I got my finger out and did a ridiculous challenge to try and raise as much money for The Children’s Hospital Charity as possible!

Caz’s words of advice for anyone thinking of taking on the Virtual Stampede are, “It makes you feel good when you realise you have pushed yourself to the limit and gone through pain during your challenge, and you receive notifications that people have donated. It just makes it extra special and warms your heart knowing that you are helping to make a difference to people’s lives.”
