A price hike of over 13 per cent on bus tickets is to hit the pockets of thousands of passengers.

Bus operator First is increasing its £1.50 and £2 fares in Sheffield by 20 pence each from the end of the month. Weekly tickets are also to go up, by 50 pence.

Dual ‘Optio’ tickets - unveiled with a fanfare in 2011 to allow commuters to travel on any bus along the busy 52 and 120 Sheffield routes - are to be axed from the end of March. They will be replaced by new ‘network tickets’, which will cost more.

Optio weekly tickets currently cost £10.50 - but the new First week network option will be £12.

Optio Red and Orange day tickets meanwhile currently cost £3.40 - but instead one First day network ticket will cost £3.80.

All will allow passengers to travel on both the 52 and 120 corridors, on a First or Stagecoach bus.

First’s spokesman Ben Gilligan said ‘great value’ new child day and week tickets – costing £2 or £5 – were being launched.

He said increases had been kept to a ‘minimum’, many fares were to be frozen, and the average increase was three per cent.

“We appreciate nobody likes any increase to fares,” he added, blaming ‘rising costs’.
