He died at the city’s Northern General Hospital in Fir Vale two days later.

The bus driver, a 55-year-old man from Rotherham, was found dead at his home last Saturday morning.

Mr Wing-Cooper, from County Down in Northern Ireland, had been due to face a three-and-half day trial at Sheffield Crown Court in July on charges of gross indecency and indecent assault relating to allegations dating back to the 1970s.

The bus driver, who has not been named, was taken off duty by First following the incident to allow investigations to take place. Ben Gilligan, managing director of First South Yorkshire, said: “Our thoughts are with everyone involved in these tragic circumstances. We continue to work closely with South Yorkshire Police as part of their investigation and are doing all we can to support our driver’s family during this very difficult period.”

Mr Wing-Cooper’s inquest opened on Thursday.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called on Wednesday, April 22, at about 6.45pm, to reports of a collision involving a 68-year-old pedestrian and a bus in Pond Street, Sheffield.

“The 68-year-old man, Sui Wing-Cooper, from Ireland, was taken to hospital with serious injuries where he died two days later.

“Mr Wing-Cooper was charged in January this year with gross indecency and indecent assault, in connection with alleged offences from the 1970s.

“Police were called on Saturday, April 25, at about 9.30am, to a property in Rotherham, where the body of a 55-year-old man was discovered.

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.”

The bus driver’s family declined to comment.
