Paulie Malignaggi has put his name forward to be the first man Kell Brook will defend his world title against.
Malignaggi, who fought in England in 2008, appears to be on the way down the ratings after losing two of his last three fights - but is still a high profile name in the sport and would guarantee a big Sheffield Arena crowd.
The New Yorker was stopped in four disastrous rounds by Shawn Porter in April last year, the man Brook went on to beat to claim the IBF title in August.
But he has been in with some of the best, including Adrien Broner, Jose Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan and Ricky Hatton.
The American said: “Kell Brook has a world title so he interests any top welterweight. Who wouldn’t fancy a chance to win a world title? An opportunity to win a world title is one I don’t think anyone would turn down.”
Brook’s IBF mandatory defence is Jo Jo Dan, who defeated Kevin Bizier in a rematch last December.
But a match-up with Malignaggi could appeal to promoter Eddie Hearn, who has promised to make an announcement soon. The East Side Boxing website reckons Hearn would rather go for him, rather than the likes of Keith Thurman, Marcos Maidana or Robert Guerrero.
