Legendary Sheffield boxing trainer Brendan Ingle is being treated for an infection in hospital, The Star can confirm.

The 73-year-old former professional boxer, of Wincobank, was admitted to The Royal Hallamshire Hospital on Wednesday.

He is receiving treatment on a neurology ward.

Daughter Bridget Ingle told The Star today: “Dad is in the Hallamshire with an infection and he is responding to treatment.

“He is getting expert care at the Hallamshire and we will keep people informed of his progress.

“Thank you to people for their good wishes.”

Brendan was due to attend a fight between Lee Duncan - who turned his life around through boxing - and Jamie Hughes at iceSheffield in Attercliffe tonight.

Speaking before the fight Lee said: “To be honest I owe it all to boxing and Brendan.”

Brendan has coached several champions and was named as one of the top boxing champions of all time, receiving an MBE for his contribution in 1998.
