Seventeen people were assaulted in Sheffield city centre over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Sheffield Central Local Policing Team said 14 of the assaults took place between 10pm and 5am on the nights between Good Friday and Easter Monday.

There were also 17 reported thefts, with phones and purses taken largely from people ‘worse the wear from drinking’.

A spokesman said: “With many people enjoying the Easter break the city centre was particularly busy over the weekend. Friday and Sunday nights, in particular, saw many thousands of people in the city centre enjoying a good time into the early hours. This unfortunately had some unpleasant outcomes for a small number of people and we have had 17 reports of assault over Friday to Monday.”

There were also 11 reports of criminal damage and a scooter stolen in Broomhall.
