Seven injured in Sheffield police van smash

Seven people were injured when a police van was involved in a late night crash with a car in Sheffield.

The van - containing three officers and a 28-year-old woman who had just been arrested - was in collision with the red Peugeot 207 on Abbeydale Road, Woodseats at about 11.30pm on Sunday.

The marked South Yorkshire Police Mercedes sprinter van had been travelling along Abbeydale Road when the Peugeot 207 joined the street from Machon Bank.

Fire crews attended the scene and had to cut off the roof of the car to free the female driver and two men from where they were trapped in their seats.

The 24-year-old woman from Sheffield suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

She has since been discharged.

The two male passengers, also aged 24, were taken to hospital with minor injuries and have also been discharged.

The 50-year-old police officer who was driving the van suffered minor injuries, as did two more officers – a 30-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman.

A 28-year-old woman who was travelling in the police van suffered serious injuries and was also taken to hospital, but has since been released into police custody.

Police are now investigating the crash and appealing for witnesses to come forward.
