Residents are being urged to step up their security with more valuables available for would-be thieves to steal after Christmas.
The North East Derbyshire Community Safety Partnership has issued the reminder.
Its chairman, Councillor Lilian Robinson, said: “Our message is quite simple. Secure your sheds and outbuildings and don’t leave valuables on show in your vehicle.
“It’s also important that if you are out for any length of time that your property continues to look as though it is lived in. So make the best use of technology and leave your TV or lights on a timer.
“Post-Christmas is often a time when would-be-burglars are more likely to be on the prowl as they know people have received new items of technology or expensive gifts so I really hope that this message gets across to people.”
