CUTE little Freya Morgan-Whittaker really is something special. The six-year-old, from High Green, Sheffield caught the attention of Star readers when she recorded and released her own CD last month for Comic Relief.

Her cover of Dolly Parton’s classic country hit Jolene became an internet sensation which was downloaded all over the world, raising more than £580 for charity.

In recognition of her incredible effort Freya’s mum Elaine has nominated the High Green Primary pupil for the The Star Superkids Fundraiser of the Year Award.

For the 15th year, The Star has organised a celebrity-packed awards ceremony to celebrate South Yorkshire children’s achievements, qualities and talents - and the nominations are rolling in.

Elaine, aged 39, said: “We are so proud of her. Freya really enjoyed making the CD.

“She sold 40 copies and the track was featured on a Dolly Parton fan’s website, which brought in more money. We had people in Germany and Texas sponsoring her.”

Freya learned the tune when her music-teacher dad Carl, 46, was practising it for lessons.

She got to grips with the lyrics and Carl recorded it on his home studio.

Elaine said: “We explained to her what it was all for, to help others who weren’t as fortunate as her. She really liked the attention at school but she never became big-headed about it. When people asked her about it she would tell them she was raising money for people who didn’t have very much.”

Freya doesn’t have any other musical plans lined up just yet, but Elaine said she was sure there would be another project in the pipeline before long. If you know a child or teenager like Freya, who has gone the extra mile to raise money for charity, there is still time to nominate them for a Superkids award.
