Scumbags have defaced Chesterfield war memorial - in the third such incident in three years.

The mindless vandals sprayed the word 'Rich' in red paint on the Rose Hill memorial over the weekend.

Chesterfield resident Jacky Sockett, who alerted the Derbyshire Times about the vandalism, said: "What is wrong with these animals?

"I find it terribly upsetting that people can be so ignorant, mindless and disrespectful so heaven knows how family, friends and relatives of the people the war memorial represents feel?"

Councillor John Burrows, Chesterfield Borough Council’s leader, said: "I am extremely disappointed to see that the memorial has been defaced yet again.

"This is pure vandalism and an absolute insult to the fallen of Chesterfield.

"Not only is it very disrespectful, it is also a waste of council taxpayers' money to clean.

"This will require cleaning by specialist contractors and will cost several hundred pounds to repair the damage."

A spokesman for Derbyshire police added: "We would encourage anyone who has information about who might be responsible to contact police on 101 and we will take action to bring the offenders to justice."

The memorial was last defaced in 2014 during the centenary year of the First World War. It was previously vandalised in 2013.
