A scruffy Sheffield flat has missed out on the title of Britain's most disgusting student digs.

The picture, by Sheffield Hallam University student "Nick," showing weeks' worth of plates and pots piled up by the sink, missed out on top spot in the competition to find the nation's dirtiest flats and homes where students live.

Teenager Brittani Cooper was crowned as having Britain's dirtiest student house after she was told to enter by her appalled father.

Brittani, 19, ironically studying real estate at the University of the West of England, scooped the dubious accolade after submitting revolting photos to the competition after her dad saw how grim her kitchen was at her home in Filton, Bristol, and told her to enter.

The winning pictures - the worst out of 982 entries - reveal stomach-churning scenes inside the flat she shares with five housemates.

Bins are overflowing, piles of pizza boxes are stacked on top of bin bags, dirty plates tower next to the sink and black grease covers the hob.

Miss Cooper said: 'My dad saw that web-blinds.com had launched a campaign to find the UK's worst student digs on an online news site.

'He sent me the link to the article as a joke because he knew that my housemates and I didn't exactly keep our flat the tidiest during the past year.

'I decided it was worth entering with some images of our very messy kitchen, and now I'm so happy I did.'

Miss Cooper has won £500 for coming first in the competition, run by web-blinds.com, the sister site of Hilarys.

She said she will use the cash "towards decorating my new student house for my second year."
