SIXTY years on and they’re still making waves…
The Queen will mark her Diamond Jubilee this year with a pageant, church services and an extra bank holiday for her subjects.
And Handsworth Scouts - officially 273rd Sheffield (Handsworth) - have a year of events planned to celebrate their 60th birthday, including a sponsored swim.
Some 21 youngsters aged nine to 15 and two leaders swam lengths at Spring Leisure Centre on East Bank Road, Sheffield. And after they’d finished, beavers and cubs took part in a series of races.
Yvonne Messenger, member of the parents’ committee and grandmother to scout Samuel Elliott, aged 12, said they chose swimming because it was also the year of the Olympics.
She added: “They thought it was great, they had so much fun. Thanks must go to leisure centre who donated the pool and lifeguards for three hours free.”
The sponsored swim will be followed by a 1950s night in February and a party at the hut on Handsworth Road, in August.
Yvonne said the group had enjoyed a recent revival, through word of mouth. It is up from 50 members five years ago to 80 now.
