A YEAR of celebrations to mark 100 years of a Sheffield scout troop was launched with an Olympic Games-inspired ceremony.
Scouts, cubs and beavers in Stocksbridge marched into the town centre with their own contributions to a traditional camp fire lit in front of special guests, including MP Angela Smith.
The cubs came from Underbank reservoir with kindling, scouts from Hunshelf Hill with wood and beavers brought the striker to create the flames, from Bolsterstone Church.
Beaver group leader Michelle Shaw said the troop had more than 80 members.
She said: “Our founder was a man called Brook Stanley who emigrated to Australia.
“We have recently been able to get in touch with his descendants who were delighted to hear the troop was still going strong.
“They sent us a message wishing us luck and they may donate a cup or plaque to be placed in the scout hut to mark the anniversary.”
