School's closure for right reason?
PLANS to close Wisewood School and merge onto a new site with Myers Grove in have caused much controversy and anguish to parents in the Hillsborough area.
Residents say they will fight on to save the school but the council, despite its consultation process, is determined to make the changes.
This is not a new issue.
Falling rolls all over the country have led to closures and mergers of many established schools.
The upside is that the area will get a brand new school by 2011, though that is of little comfort at this stage.
The council has to ensure it gets good value for money and falling pupil numbers means keeping both schools open is not viable from their point of view.
What should be of paramount concern in all this is the education and well-being of the children.
If they are to get better facilities and technical support in a new school that has to be for the good - despite having to travel further to get there.
If this is merely cost-cutting leading to bigger classes in future then the council has to think again.
For the sake of the children and their future we have to get it right.

YOUNG Toby Large worked hard to earn enough money for his mobile phone and jewellery.
At 12 years of age he delivered The Star and saved his money for months.
Then in an instant all his hard work was gone when yobs mugged him and broke his nose as he cycled near his home. Sickening violence and theft like this on a decent lad should not go unpunished.

IT should be one of the culinary world's simple pleasures...but does simplicity have to come with a hefty price tag?
One chef has come up with a pancake which he placed on the menu at a staggering 95, mainly thanks to its topping of Dom Perignon champagne, vintage brandy, vanilla pods and ice cream.
