School leads campaign to help tackle world hunger
A TRAILBLAZING school in Sheffield has made a stand in the fight to end world hunger.
Tapton School has raised over 330 in 10p pieces as part of the Really Good School Dinner Scheme.
The initiative, which takes place nationally in January 2010, asks pupils to donate an extra 10p to their lunch for a week to help feed children in some of the world's poorest countries.
The project is being run in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
Sheffield councillor Andrew Sangar said: "I know the charity was overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of the Tapton children. I'm delighted they have been chosen to lead the campaign nationally."
The campaign also aims to highlight the importance of UK children eating a healthy school lunch.
David Bowes, Tapton School headteacher, said: "The campaign is a huge education vehicle for schools."
The first Really Good School Dinner, held in January 2009, raised 11,855 for the WFP.
Liberal Democrat leader and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg said: "I think the campaign is an excellent way of raising money to feed hungry children across the world."
