School hall plan given the go-ahead

A PRIMARY school in a Sheffield village has been given special permission to build a school hall – despite concerns it would encroach the city's green belt.

Bradfield Dungworth Primary is the only school in Sheffield without an assembly hall.

Pupils currently use the community hall in Bradfield Green for PE lessons, and clear their classrooms to sit down to dinner.

But to build a proper hall the school had to demonstrate to Sheffield Council the "very special circumstances" required to build on green belt land.

Headteacher Stuart Barton said: "With our own hall we can have PE lessons on site, we won't have to go to the next village to rehearse and perform plays, we could have school assemblies, and we could start an after-school club.

"Ofsted bring up the issue of the school hall every time they assess us."

The school plans to open the proposed hall to wider community use, as the current village hall is in bad repair.

Coun Trevor Bagshaw said: "This an excellent example of organisations solving a community problem by working together. I hope they can now raise the money to fund the hall.

"Too often the children of the outer reaches of this city have been neglected."

The West and North Planning Board received five letters of support, and comments of concern from Loxley Valley Protection Society and Loxley Valley Design Group.

Seven councillors unanimously approved the proposals for a single- storey hall, including a 10m high wind turbine and parking.
