School kids are on a mission to beat bike champ Peat in cycling time trial
PEAT that!
Sheffield mountain bike world champ Steve Peat put his pedals to the metal over a half-a-mile 'course' and set a blistering time for school children to beat.
The downhill racer cycled hell for leather on a static bike linked to a computer at Meynell Primary School, Wadsley Bridge, and covered the distance in just one minute and 16 seconds.
Now, pupils at 19 city schools will aim to 'Beat Peat' in a time trial competition.
The technology will allow them to race over the same virtual course, monitoring their progress directly against Steve's as they go.
National cycling charity Sustrans is behind the project.
Steve, who won his downhill world title in September in Australia, said: "It's great to be involved with the Sustrans Bike It project. I have always encouraged young people to get into this great sport, so to be involved in this way is a big bonus for me."
The school which clocks the fastest time will win a visit from Steve, who is originally from Chapeltown. And the fastest boy and girl will each get a new mountain bike.
