Sam's so close as he keeps his nerve
POP Idol pin-up Sam Nixon has sung his way into the final three and today remained the bookies' hot favourite to win the competition.
Which means the young Barnsley boy, who made it to the final 12 only after being given a second chance as the judge's choice in the wildcard heat, is less than two weeks away from being crowned the Pop Idol
As Sam-mania continues to sweep South Yorkshire, the 17-year-old admitted after Saturday night's live show that he had been more nervous before performing his two Christmas songs than at any stage in the contest.
But that didn't stop the singing chef again winning praise from the judges and millions of viewers' votes.
His status as a heart throb was acknowledged by a national newspaper which featured him on the front page and judge Foxy, who told him and 12 million viewers: "There are millions of girls out there who would like you in their Christmas stocking".
Today Sam and the remaining two other competitors Michelle and Mark, are recording their version of the single that the winner of Pop Idol will release after the grand final on December 20.
On Saturday in the Christmas-themed show Sam sang Santa Claus is Coming to Town and I wish it could be Christmas every Day, prompting judge Nickie Campbell to tell him:"You were brilliant" with Simon Cowell adding "You were great".
Sam's family from Barnsley were joined in the studio audience by a former rival, Kieron, who was in the same wild card heat as Sam, who was waving his Star Vote Sam poster and said: "Sam is a top guy, he's going to win."
After the show Sam admitted he had been convinced he might go out on Saturday night and said: "The tension and the reality of how close it is now to the winner being chosen has really kicked in.
"It's so close now you can almost smell it. We were told there was only one per cent between the bottom two and I really really thought I was one of those two.
"I want this with all my heart, it's all I have ever dreamed of. The Pop Idol album is released, we are going on tour in March, all these things are happening and it's just amazing.
"But all I want to concentrate on now is giving a good performance next week and hopefully the people who have been so supportive will continue to vote for me because that's what it's all about."
On Saturday's show viewers can see Sam visiting his home town of Barnsley and singing in the Alhambra shopping centre in front of 2,500 screaming fans, all waving their Star Vote Sam posters.
