Safety first on transport

POLICE in South Yorkshire are to join with transport chiefs in a summer campaign to make bus and tram passengers feel safer - and to crack down on ticket dodgers.

The joint operation, supported by Travel South Yorkshire, will see uniformed police and travel inspectors patrolling major routes.

The initiative will start in June and will go on throughout the summer.

Trial operations have been conducted and have proved a great success.

In just one evening in April, 64 buses and more than 900 tickets were checked on buses between Sheffield city centre and Meadowhall.

Inspectors found 21 passengers travelling without a valid ticket and one was using a forged pass. All those caught were fined 35 on the spot.
