'Rowdy' fear over 4am pub

PLANS by a Sheffield city centre pub to open until 4am are being opposed by a neighbouring resident who is concerned about noise from "rowdy crowds" and taxis in the early hours.

Punch Taverns has applied to Sheffield Council for extended hours at The Washington, Fitzwilliam Street, and a decision is to be made by the licensing board on Thursday.

The pub, a popular live music venue once co-owned by former Pulp drummer Nick Banks, has applied to open until 4am Mondays to Saturdays, serving alcohol until 3am. Sunday hours would be unchanged.

But Punch has withdrawn a request to extend the hours for live music beyond the current limit of 1am Mondays to Saturdays and midnight on Sundays on advice from the council. The Washington now serves alcohol until 1am Mondays to Saturdays and midnight on Sundays, closing 30 minutes later.

The objection was made by a resident of nearby Cavendish Court, who said: "Residents shouldn't have to endure increasingly poor-quality life through lengthening hours of nearby establishments."
