Row over cost of modernising loos

Have your say

A ROW has blown up over the cost of improving the gents’ loo at a 100-year-old cinema.

Proposals have been made to change the layout in the balcony toilet at the Paramount cinema, Penistone, which is owned and operated by Penistone Town Council.

The council is proposing to spend around £10,000 removing the sit-on loo cubicle so they can add a larger urinal which currently has only two spaces because it is too cramped.

Coun Joe Unsworth told the council he thought the cost was too much.

But Coun Chris Pilkington, chair of the Leisure and Amenities Committee which administers the cinema that has a licensed bar, said: “The two urinals are used far more than the toilet and it is so cramped that male cinema-goers have to wait outside the loos if more than two people are wanting to use the urinal, which is not very satisfactory.

“If anyone wants to use the actual loo there is one downstairs so there is not really a problem.”

He added: “I was surprised Coun Unsworth objected because the upstairs male toilet needs updating.”
