Rotherham United have suspended the player convicted of headbutting a woman on a drunken night out while they conduct their own probe.
The Millers took action this afternoon, a day after midfielder Simon Lenighan pleaded guilty to assault at Harrogate Magistrates Court.
Lenighan signed for the club only last week. The attack, in which two other women were also assaulted, happened in Harrogate last February.
The 21-year-old had been cleared of a rape charge a fortnight earlier.
A Millers statement said: "The club can announce that, following recent reported events in the press and having spoken with the player concerned, it has decided to suspend Simon Lenighan pending an investigation into the matter."
