Rotherham United new signing Simon Lenighan has escaped jail after pleading guilty to headbutting a woman during a drunken night out.

The 21-year-old, who joined the club last week, attacked his victim while on a night out in Harrogate last February.

He was given a 12-month community order, which includes 150 hours of unpaid work, and has to pay damages.

He admitted assaulting three women, including headbutting one, after he had been drinking heavily.

A fortnight earlier, the former Leeds United midfielder had been cleared of a rape charge.

The Millers last week handed him the chance to resurrect his career after he had dropped into non-league football.
