REDEVELOPMENT is set to take place at a South Yorkshire shopping centre after an agreement between council chiefs and a property company.
Rotherham Council has completed a deal with Caddick Developments that will see the Bellows Road Shopping Centre, Rawmarsh, redeveloped with five new shops being built, covering 8,500 sq feet.
The revamped centre is to house retailers including Tesco, Heron Foods, Staniforths Bakers and Vantage Chemist, along with a new residential development.
Work is due to start on site at the end of April and be completed by October in time for opening before Christmas.
In the meantime, the current post office, Vantage Chemist, Staniforth’s Bakers and butcher Eric Ellis will continue to operate from the existing shopping centre.
Once the new shops are complete, the council will demolish the current Bellows Road centre, which dates back to the 1960s, in preparation for a residential development.
Coun Neil Hamilton, Rotherham Council Labour member for Rawmarsh, said: “For years, the current centre has been an eyesore.
“The agreement represents a vital step to realising our ambition of bringing new shopping to Rawmarsh.”
