Rotherham MP John Healey has accused Communities Secretary Eric Pickles of ‘turning his back’ on firefighters.

A row between firefighters and the Government over pensions and retirement age has lasted more than three years and has included strikes.

The new scheme, which is due to come into force in April 2015, will see firefighters expected to work until they are 60, even though a Government report said two-thirds would not meet the fitness standard.

Mr Healey said: “Why has he turned his back on firefighters? It is a disgrace that the Secretary of State has personally allowed the dispute over fire service pensions to drag on for three years.”
