A 55-year-old Rotherham man is in hospital with multiple injuries after he was seriously assaulted in his home.

Police were called to a property on Katherine Road, Thurcroft, at about 9.45pm on Tuesday after reports a man had been found injured.

The 55-year-old was taken to hospital with multiple injuries and is currently in a serious condition.

It comes weeks after 80-year-old Tommy Ward was attacked in his Salisbury Road home in Maltby. Officers say there is nothing to suggest the two attacks are linked, but they are keeping an ‘open mind’.

Detective Inspector Simon Palmer said: “This was a sustained assault on a vulnerable man in his own home and we are working hard to gather as much information as we can about what may have happened.

“Officers are in the local area carrying out house-to-house enquires and we remain at the scene gathering evidence to try and identify those responsible for this awful crime.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance for the local community and we’re keen to speak to anyone who may hold information.”

If you were in the Katherine Road area between 4pm and 10pm on Tuesday evening and witnessed any suspicious behaviour or activity, call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 1152 of 27 October 2015.
