A pair of Rotherham drug dealers caught with more than £15,000 worth of heroin and cocaine have been jailed for four years each.
Nafees Alam and Omar Ali, both 23 and living at different addresses on Selwyn Street, Eastwood, Rotherham, were sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court after pleading guilty to two counts of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.
They admitted being part of a drug-dealing operation in the town after being caught in the same house as thousands of pounds worth of drugs and a mobile phone containing texts arranging various sales.
The court heard the pair had been inside a rented property on Flanderwell Lane which was being used as a base for drug dealers to prepare their supply.
It was raided by police on March 23 this year, with Class A drugs found in several locations inside the house, including some hidden inside a lampshade.
Alam had been wearing a pair of plastic gloves when police burst in and is believed to have been in the process of handling drugs.
The drugs found in the property had an estimated street value of £15,390.
Both men had previous convictions for possessing cannabis, with Alam having just been released from jail at the time of the offences after being given a 10-month sentence in 2014 for dangerous driving.
The court was told Alam, who is due to become a father next month, had a heroin habit himself and was expecting to be paid ‘in kind’ with drugs for his involvement with the dealing operation.
The pair were sentenced on the basis that they had been above a level higher in the operation than street dealers, involved in the preparation and supply of the drugs to those selling on the streets.
Judge Mark Gargan said the men had been found with ‘significant’ quantities of Class A drugs in their possession.
He said: “You are each young men who have criminal records which show that you have been involved with drugs in the sense that you have been in possession of cannabis but not that you have been dealing in such drugs.”
He said the pair would have been jailed for five-and-a-half years each but were given credit for their guilty pleas.
Judge Gargan also ordered the destruction of the drugs that were found in the police raid.
