Claims that councillors were told to keep under wraps information about the Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal were slammed by opposition members.

Rotherham UKIP leader Caven Vines said Rotherham Council’s cabinet should stand down after meeting to discuss the Jay Report.

He said: “The meeting was a complete shambles. They are still trying to put a lid on things. They were told to keep it confidential but if they used their brains and followed their conscience and morals, just think how many victims they could have saved.

“I was an Independent in 2005 and I can say hand on my heart I did not know. Labour should all stand down - all of them.”
